Abstract

The role of education in the formation of a nation is a generally accepted idea. During the nationalization process, compulsory education takes a leading role to create a homogenous society. The integrative and separative function of a language placed it the center of the education.The discovery of language-nationalism interactions enforced minorities included in a nation state's borders tor protect their identity via linguistic nationalism and to struggle for keeping alive or standardizing their language and for making their language as an educational one using international acts. In recent years, majority of the emerged sepatarist movements are language-based. The favorable referenced resource of these movements is the European Convention on Human Rights as well as the European Court of Human Rights. In this article, we evaluate the importance of the language, the relationship of language and nationalism, and the education in the mother tongue in the light of European Court of Human Rights’ decisions.
