Abstract

Rize is located in the Eastern Black Sea section of the Black Sea Region. It is surrounded by non-passable high mountains and valleys and has therefore an enclosed geography. Its economy is based on agriculture, husbandry and industry, and it is known that its people work on copperworking, ironworking, stonework, textile, carpentry, quilting, weaving overalls and playing kamancheh, and market their works to various places across the country. The local people create these works by shaping substance, and they are important in that they constitute the people’s plastic arts in the region. Produced with various tools, used in daily life or special days with their portable property, and produced in a master-apprentice relationship, folk plastic arts are observed to be performed by a limited number of craftsmen who live in and around the Rize province and who aspire to master this art. This study addresses weaving overalls, playing kamancheh, copperworking, ironworking, weaving baskets, quilting, Rize cloth textile and weaving socks professions which are performed in the area by handicraft and which fall under the scope of folk plastic arts.
