Abstract

The development of traditional music in Ottoman period is investigated by many researchers and results of this study is detailed by giving attention to mode, pitch . However , historical development of instruments paid little attention Studies on the history of Turkish music shows us that music played in Ottoman palace is determined by the preference of Sultan . Music enviroment of Ottoman is maintained in enderun an harem and in front of the sultan. By the 18.th century , Ottoman music is highly influenced by Persia and Arabian culture. Instruments used in that era developed with the influence of these cultures. Westernization in 18.th century brough violin, clarinet to Ottoman palace and they were performanced by artmakers. In this study , with the investigations of stringed instruments used in Ottoman palace like ud and lavta , we tried to understand the impostance of these stringed musical instruments . The involment of this study includes well scanned articles , books , archive documents and picturer of instruments in the miniature.
