Abstract

The Suzuki teaching method was created by Japanese violinist and pedagogue Shinichi Suzuki. His philosophy was that talent is not inborn; it can be gained through proper education. The method took off after the second world war and has achieved great popularity and success. The Suzuki Method, which starts children at a very early age, is also referred to as the ‘Mother Tongue Method’. This name comes from the fact that the method is supposed to be analogous to the steps that a baby makes when first learning to speak. These steps are: baby listens to her mother and watches her mother when saying the word, mother repeats the word to her baby, baby imitates her and finally gains the ability to repeat the word. Suzuki believed that since all children learn to speak their native tongues with the utmost fluency, they must also have the ability to learn to play an instrument fluently. This idea is the foundation of his method. Suzuki also believed that good music education can positively affect the development of other abilities in children, causing them to grow into happier and more confident adults. In order to discover the child’s capacity, parents have the very important duty to give their child the best education. The most important principle of this education is to make listening to music a habit from early childhood.
