Abstract

After Christianity became the official religion of the Roman Empire, religion and art relation started to be institutionalized for European art. Clergy and Maecenas who ordered paintings so as to increase their prestige and demonstrate their loyalty to religion, ensured their portraits to take place in compositions including sacred figures in religion related paintings. This situation causes an anachronic situation considering the painting surface in terms of time. The aim in this research is to examine the time, place and figure relation in religion related paintings in European art, belonging to 15th and 16th centuries in; to determine the anachronic elements and the reasons why these elements took place in paintings by conducting resolutions through the pieces of art and ground the revealed relations from history of art point of view.
