ANALYZING THE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS’ PERCEPTION ABOUT POPULAR AND LITERARY NOVEL WITH METAPHORS

Abstract

The aim of this study is determining the literary and popular novel perceptions of high school students with metaphors. For this purpose, students were supposed to produce metaphors about popular novel and literary novel. In this study, phenomenology pattern, one of the qualitative research methods, was used. Attendants of the study consisted of 103 high school students from 2 high schools (studying in Ulubatlı Hasan Anatolian High School and Nuri Erbak Anatolian High School) in 2015-2016 academic year. Data of the study was acquired through sentences such as “Popular is like…, because…” and “Literary novel is like…because….” Content analyses method, one of the percent age calculations and qualitative searches was used in the data analysis. The metaphors determined by students were gathered under 10 categories taking account of their common features. It was pointed out that these categories differed in the classes. According to the results, It was pointed that metaphors produced for popular novels and ranking in the first five were novel as hedonic work (%46,6), novel as fluent and escapist work(%21,4), novel as time wasting and useless work (%11,7), novels as permanent work (%9,7) novel as well-known work (%6,8), for literary novels; novel as in comprehensible and boring work (%35), novel as enlightening and permanent work (%23,3), novel as beneficial work (%17.5), novel a work having moral values (%10,7), novel as a represents of reality (%4,9). Besides, anyone of the metaphors belonging to popular novel is not about novel as work having moral values, incomprehensible and boring work, and novel as work compulsory and representing reality. Anyone of the metaphors belonging to literary novel is not about novel as hedonic work, novel as well-known work.
