Abstract

The comparison between the art of painting and poetry first emerged in ancient times with an illustration of Simonides through the concepts of sound and visual expression. Horatius addressed the issue with a balanced approach arising from the unity of opposites; Plato and Aristotle have evaluated these two arts within a framework of logic based on their nature and existence, albeit different from each other. In the 15th century, with the access to the translation of the ancient texts and with the awakening of the Renaissance, the comparison of these two arts as a matter of representation comes into question. Leonardo Da Vinci's notes are the best example of this. These notes are compiled by Francesco Melzi, his student, after the death of Da Vinci, under the name “Paragone”. Da Vinci, who set out from Simonides' argument, with consider the comparative advantage of sensory organs and he almost write a defense text. This text also clearly questions the social position of poetry and art of painting.
