Abstract

Natural elements of earth have a profound effect on human activities. Climate is found determining and decisive factor in shaping and formation of the earth’s landscape, vegetation cover, soil profile and human activities. The selected study area Kastamonu is a versatile place with varied climatic conditions in terms of extent of the area covered and the diversity of the land forms. The regional approach is applied in research methods. However, the systematic approach has also been used in some places. The observations of meteorological stations were used in the collection and analysis of the data. ArcGIS 10.3 package program was used to prepare cartographic illustrations. Lack of a thorough research work on Kastamonu and its surroundings in recent years makes the study more important in this field. The Küre and Ilgaz mountains extending in the east-west direction of the area and the depression areas between these mountains along with alluvial plains formed by river valleys constitute the main geomorphological units. In the study area where the ground shapes are diversified, there is a transition of climate from more humid Black Sea climate in the Black sea coast towards semi-humid-semi-arid terrestrial climate in the inner parts (south). The rainfall on the inner part is decreased to only 500 mm from 1000 mm on the coastal areas. The average temperatures ranges from 7.6 ° C to 15 ° C in the area. However, the average temperature remains higher on the Black Sea coast with a significant decrease in the south. These climatic patterns show that the local conditions are more dominant than the latitude effect on the climate of the area. According to the climate classification formulas applied to the area it is found that climate characteristics remain more humid in the coastal areas but towards interior they gradually turns into semi-humid and semi-arid. Keeping in view the climate characteristics of the area it is found important for diversity of the economic activities of residents and pattern of grown crops. Suitable regional plans formulated according to varied climatic conditions in and around Kastamonu are perceived to provide positive contributions for both the local people and the country.
