Abstract

Existentialism which expresses man who is alienated to himself and the society, unhappy and restless man tries to reveal the fact that the individual is under threat and is becoming a meaningless existence. Existentialism is a philosophical search appearing with the loss of spiritual values of Europe which went through 1st and 2nd World War due to the massacres and tortures the Europe experienced. Besides this, it is an effort to rebuild the individual who is the object of a monotony life. Existentialism which rises among the ruins of 20th century in which great wars were prevalent is a philosophy which appeared in an era in which every kind of value special to human in real terms. This is why denial appears against some beliefs and prejudices which hasn’t been beneficial for the humans, hasn’t been able to protect him from the evil and has caused him to be under pressure. This stream of thought which enables man to form himself, to make his choice in freedom, features the intimidation of man against the problems, man’s giving in and his suicide rather than finding solution to the loneliness of man who lost his entity, his being left alone and his pessimism. In other words, it becomes a philosophy which causes man to feel hopeless instead of instilling hope. In the introduction of this study, after drawing a general frame of existentialism, Sartre’s war and Freedom Paths (Özgürlük Yolları) triplet which consists of (Akıl Çağı, Yaşanmayan Zaman ve Yıkılış) ‘Age of Reason, Unlived Time and Downfall’ novels in which he presents the main principles of existentialism philosophy have been focused. The existential features in these novels have been examined under two titles as persons and themes. And ın the conclusion part, a summative assessment has been made.
