Abstract

We aim to reveal how public service ads on drug addiction being one of the health communication activities, are received by university students, who are the target population. We have performed reception analysis on total four public service ads while two were national and the other two were foreign, which are produced for the purpose of fighting with drug addiction, broadcasted at various television channels in Turkey and the world and which may be reached through web. The reception analysis data have been collected via focus group interviews. The findings obtained reveal an important deficiency on transmitting public service ads for fighting with drug addiction to target population. Public service ads being broadcasted by the Green Crescent Society, are found weak in terms of characters, story line and visual-audio elements; and qualified as unsuccessful, ineffective and far from functionality based on mentioned reasons. It is recommended for the public services ads produced for the purpose of fighting drug addiction to give realistic information instead of emotional messages and to be educative through the same. It is required to produce public service ads far from stereotype judgement on persons and towards different target population and present the same at right media.
