Abstract

In this study we are going to analyze the solutions of the problems of contemporary western culture, its institutions, the crisis in the modern World, globalization, capitalism, class differences and industrial society by Ivan Illich who is an Austrian philosopher and a forgotten society critic. The purpose of this study is to explain the problems caused by the modern world and to bring solutions to these problems. Illich criticizes contemporary west and modernism because of the fact that they cause transformation of tools into goals, institutionalization of values and also because continious innovations damage traditions and ecology. What he means by continuous innovations are industrial and technological developments. Illich is against monopolization of institutions and that they serve the industrial community. He sides with the vernacular (traditional) values. The materialist lifestyle of West creates a monotypic, passive and homogenous consumer society. If communities haven’t got their own traditional values and creativity, they will be forgotten and degenerated. Industrial society creates unlimited needs. When human begins to dominate the nature, a mechanical universe occurs. Overpopulation and wrong technology cause the degradation of the environment. As a precaution for this problem, Illich recommends population control, balanced consumption and contraception. Using of prepared foods cause radical monotypic. So this is the reason of the institutionalization of values. Finally, if people do their own traditional home cooking instead of ready-made foods, they sew their own clothes and more plant trees, the world becomes more livable and an active society is formed.
