Abstract

Ahmet Cemil, who is both in the position of narrator and the protagonist in Halid Ziya Uşaklıgil’s Mai ve Siyah, confronts the reader with the construction of melancholic masculinity with which the reader has not been familiar so far. Drawing attention through his romantic and reticent characteristic, protagonist Ahmet Cemil’s wealthy imagination that is in the pursuit of high aspirations and his introvert temperament that has to face with the tough realities of life reveal a novel kind of masculinity experience both in the context of fictional and social gender roles. When poetry and love are at the stake of Ahmet Cemil’s adventure of individuation process, by the tragedy of the experienced realities, masculinity experience, which are romantic and idealist, will lend its place to melancholic masculine conscious which is afflicted permanently with deprivation and cannot find a reason for himself to struggle. In the study, the reasons of melancholic masculinity, which cannot be encountered abundantly within the context of social gender studies, the features that such a masculinity consciousness brings to practices of life, art and its relationship with creativity will be investigated and analyzed in relation to the novel, Mai ve Siyah.
