Abstract

In classical Turkish music, Kâr works are represent the greatest form among non-religious compositions. This genre, which dates back to about 5 centuries ago, consists of long and mostly Persian lyrics. Kâr form is a type of verbal composition that requires a high artistic ability and knowledge of mode and tempo, as well, in our musical history. In this study, the place of Kâr works in the music history, its lexical meaning, structural features of its composition and kâr composers were discussed in general. The works composed by many composers from Abdülkadir-i Merâgî until today and the these type of compositions were analyzed on a period basis and listed in this study. In the research, TRT Turkish Art Music Verbal Works Repertory, the musical notes of which were determined using screening model, was addressed as the main source. It was determined that the Rast maqam was used at the furthest within 31 at the furthest compositions. While Abdülkâdir Merâgî emerges as the composer who produced the maximum number of works in this genre, oud virtuoso Cinuçen Tanrıkorur and Akın Özkan of today's composers also have works in this genre. Kâr works were mainly favored by composers between the 18th and 19th centuries. Towards the 19th and 20th centuries in Turkish music, composers did not show much interest in this type of composition which is classic, long and quite difficult such as Kâr due to reasons such as the changes experienced in "song" type by influence of Hacı Arif Bey, appreciation of this type by the society and its easier composition.
