Abstract

Turkey has a population of over 79 million and a population of more than 85 million projected in 2025. The population growth has slowed in the last thirty years and converges to developed countries’ levels. The net reproduction rate of population per woman has decreased from 1.32 in 1990 to a level of 1.05 daily. All indicators indicate that the Turkish demographic transition period has almost completed. Turkey's demographic transformation is thought to lead to a number of problems in economic and social life. Therefore, this demographic transformation has to alter the basic assumptions of economic and social planning in Turkey. Protecting a dynamic population structure may be possible with a serious mentality change in quantity, not by increasing the fertility rate.
