Abstract

The effects of altitude differences, which regulate the spheres of activity and lifestyles of people on the earth, remain important today, as they have in the past. The nature of the land in the different elevation steps determines the economic activities to be carried out. The analysis of the effect of the elevation difference on economic activity gives the opportunity to evaluate the determining role of geographical conditions. When economic activities are considered together with the spatial dimension, it is seen that all kinds of rural economic activities within the Bağlar central district administrative areas are dependent on the geographical conditions. Bağlar is one of the four central provinces located in the city center of Diyarbakır. The municipal boundaries of Bağlar is the Diyarbakır-Şanlıurfa Highway in the north, the railway line in the east, the Çınar district border in the South and Çınar-Siverek (Şanlıurfa) district boundaries in the west. In March 2008, Bağlar was declared as the central district municipality by taking the district status. In this study, the land assets of the Bağlar central district is considered as 200 meters steps. The ratios of these elevation steps in the county are determined and the rural economic activities at each elevation level are examined. The change in economic activity has been categorized from the low elevation to the high elevation and the relation between the economic activity change and the elevation step has been mentioned. Elevation steps map that prepared by using satellite images were digitized with ArcGIS 9.2 software. Land use at each elevation level was determined using ArcGIS software. The place and the importance of the change in each land use pattern, which has arisen due to elevation, has been discussed in terms of planning since the present land use patterns are determined according to the elevation steps. When the land use classes are determined, it is tried to determine the general land use situation which has not been detailed. However, the sub-use groups that stand out in every elevation range were emphasized by specifying villages, neighborhoods, plateaus and grasslands.
