CONTRIBUTION OF MADRASA SCHOLARS TO THE RELIGIOUS UNDERSTANDING OF PEOPLE OF YOZGAT

Abstract

Bozok region has been home to various cultures and civilizations since ancient times. Bozok, which was later called as Yozgat, has become a social and cultural settlement which was established by Turks in Anatolia during Ottoman period. The first known civilian religious lodges in Yozgat was the Emirci Sultan lodge which was established during rules of Anatolian Seljuk rulers Izzettin Keykavus I, Alaeddin Keykubat I and Gıyasettin Kevhüsrev II. Demirli Madrasa is the first Madrasa in Yozgat city center which was established in 1753 by famous Çapanoğlu Ahmed Agha, a Mamalı Turkmen. Madrasa, takka and lodges are the places which promote and spread Islamic faith and morals to people as presenting universal peace, and share its message of peace to the hearts of people. These educational institutions had played significant roles in the history of Islam in terms of spreading Islam, its literature, development of Islamic fine arts such as poetry and music, and Islamic ethics and morality. Scholars who had worked in these places have contributed to the improvement of people's religious beliefs and understandings as well as the city's cultural life. The purpose of this article is to examine the contribution of madrasas, takkas and lodges to the religious and cultural history of Yozgat.
