Abstract

The aim of this research is to present how Turkish teaching second grade students conceptualize their thoughts on “Cultural Interaction” through metaphors. The study group of the research consisted of 68 students who studied at Turkish Teaching Department, Gaziantep University during 2016-2017 education term. The raw data obtained through participants’ completing the statement,“Cultural Interaction is like ……., because ……...” was analyzed using qualitative data analysis techniques. According to the findings of the research, the participants generated 45 valid metaphors regarding the concept of “Cultural Interaction”. These metaphors were grouped under three different conceptual categories after the researchers examined them in terms of their common traits. These three conceptual categories in question differed greatly in terms of the gender of the participants. With reference to the overall study, we can argue that the students adopted a positive attitude regarding the fact of cultural interaction, were open to novelty and interaction, brought out the beauty of living together and attached importance to the wealth that the awareness brought.
