Abstract

Child adoption is defined as establishing a parent-child relationship between a child that has possibility of adoption and adoptive by transferring all rights and responsibilities legally. When literature was examined, no relevant valid and reliable scale was found so the aim of this research is to develop a tool that would fill this gap. A preliminary study was conducted on undergraduate students studying in varying departments in Cumhuriyet University. 347 undergraduate students (177 female, 170 male) attended this stage. We also conducted a second study on a sample of 250 undergraduate students (124 male, 126 female). For item development, a 68 items containing pool was formed via expert opinions and pre-interviews with 30 participants. After examining item-total correlations and comparing extreme groups, a final 23 items were selected. To examine criterion validity, Collectivism Scale, Interpersonal Reactivity Scale and Barnett Liking of Children Scale were administered. All the correlations observed were in the predicted manner. To conclude, Attitudes Toward Child Adoption Scale is valid and reliable on undergraduate sample.
