Abstract

From the era of of Dede Qorqud to our day, the artists who sing along with the instrument saz within a certain style and interpret the sorrow and joy of people have been called as "minstrel" or " âşık" in Turkish. These artists have been regarded as wise people among the esteemed group of people in society thanks to their knowledge and wisdom. Folk poets also performed poetry slam to show that they can carry out this performance, which is conducted in ceremonies, meetings and weddings by minstrels, without the instrument saz as well. Among pen/folk poets from Kahramanmaraş, Behlül Ali, Derdiçok, Hayati Vasfi Taşyürek, Ahmet Çıtak and Abdurrahim Karakoç started this tradition of poetry slam many years ago. The books involving the examples of the written poetry slam between a group of poets in the region in 2006 have a significant importance to sustain this tradition. This article gives examples from the poetry slam from both the initiators of this tradition and today's pen poets and touches upon how this tradition is preserved in our day.
