Abstract

Seen as an entertaining genre of the literature, crime fiction is a gift of the 19th century modernization to humanity. Modernization viewed to be the sum of the factors such as getting rid of the domination of orthodoxy and rationalization, democratization and respect to human rights, power of entrepreneurship and changing life standards has led to production of projects targeting normal societies having an order. In societies attempting to put such project into effect, it is important to restore the order and fight against crime. This has also infiltrated into literature in general and crime fiction in particular. In societies aiming modernization, crime fiction is not only for spending time but also for restoring the destroyed order and command trust in the reader. In general, in this genre, there are detectives who are intelligent, elaborative and making use of the methods offered by positive sciences and handing over the criminal to justice at the end of the adventure. Such detectives providing modernity myths for their readers catch the criminal at the end of the adventure no matter who he/she is; thus, the criminal receives the punishment he/she deserves and the things that “must happen” in the real life can be accomplished and the spoilt order can be restored again. In our literature, professional and amateur many examples of detectives can be seen though this is not an institutionalized profession in Turkey. One of these is Remzi Ünal, who is the hero of Celil Oker. Remzi is a former pilot and private detective. In the current study, the adventures of Remzi Ünal will be critically addressed considering their contributions to the genre and within the context of the modernization of Turkey and the “modern individual”.
