Abstract

The Sects that express the different forms of religious understanding, discourse and mentality in the Islamic World emerged from the causes of political, religious, socio-cultural and geographical differences and they were accepted by different social masses and they have developed in the historical process. While the formation and development processes of sects and religious groups are discussed, it seems that cultural geography also has important effects in the understanding of religion and epistemological context, besides other factors. The values and belief systems, ideologies, legal systems, forms of behavior and speech, daily living habits, even food preferences link societies within their cultural ecosystems and help them perceive and shape the world. Besides, it seems that the social groups tend to religious movements in accordance with their own cultural norms to a considerable extent. In this study, we will try to deal with the relationships between the formation and development processes of Islamic sects and cultural geographical differences with the interdisciplinary approach. In this context, firstly, the common issues that can be addressed within the scope of the History of Islamic Sects and Cultural Geography are discussed. Then, common points that can be followed in research and teaching of both fields were evaluated in terms of different approach forms, teaching materials and basic sources; thus it was highlighted the important roles that scientists interested in both fields will play in developing understanding and friendship among different religious and social groups.
