Abstract

This study seeks to examine the strategies and the decisions of translators in two different translations of the work entitled James and Giant Peach by Roald Dahl within the context of translation theories. Firstly, different views on main characteristics of children’s literature and translation of children’s literature are included. The views of Tiina Puurtinen, Riitta Oittinen, Zohar Shavit and Lawrence Venuti are presented to provide a theoretical framework. Translation texts studied are grouped under four headings: domestication- foreignization, adding, deleting and changing. It is discussed whether the decisions of translators are appropriate and useful for children. How the culture specific items in the source text are transferred to the target texts is comparatively analyzed. On the whole, it seems reasonable to point out that both translators do not adopt a consistent method and strategy in the process of translation. All things considered, it maybe concluded that Muhterem’s translation, compared to Akalın’s translation, is closer to target language, and she aims to make her translation readable and acceptable in the target language.
