Abstract

This study aims to present an analysis on arguments to what extent the EU is a global role in its power which is a common topic spoken out frequently in EU studies in literature. While examining this issue, power paradigm in international relations has been reviewed and followingly power relations shifted by cold war have been analysed. At the beginning of 2000s, Ian Manners had suggested that the EU rather than other global actors was a normative power establishing and extending global codes and norms in international relations. In we inferred from my study that the EU endeavored to gain legitimacy on its status as ‘Normative Power Europe’ via conventions putting signature by the EU and its emphasis on democracy and human rights. However, it has been understood that many factors such as security concerns, illegal migration, terrorism and energy dependence prompt the EU to realistic policies like other traditional global actors and the EU ultimately loses its reputation in terms of its constitutive values and normative ideals.
