A COMPARATIVE LOOK AT THE ENGLISH-RELATED UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMS AT TURKISH UNIVERSITIES

Abstract

In the globalizing world, the importance of learning a foreign language has increased to a notable extent. Our country has also undergone important developments in this context and serious steps have been taken as part of the state policy on teaching foreign languages, such as starting to teach English as of Grade 2 at primary level. This tendency has also shown itself in higher education programs, and in particular with the significant increase in the number of universities, the number of programs that exist in the field of foreign languages has increased considerably. For example, there are undergraduate programs such as English Language Teaching, English Translation and Interpreting, Translation Studies, English Language and Literature, English Linguistics, and American Culture and Literature. The fact that there are so many different kinds of programs related to English raises some questions about the aim of these programs, what courses are taught, and what graduates can do. For example, what are the professions to be earned by students who graduate from these programs? Are there overlapping areas of work foreseen for graduates? What are the similarities and differences between the courses offered by different programs? Where is the pedagogical formation training located in the context of these programs? In this context, this study aims to find answers to these questions through data gathered from the OSYM guide and the online information packages of universities. In the context of undergraduate programs related to English, two main professions are observed: teaching and translation-interpreting. The targeted professions and the training process will be discussed in detail for different programs.
