Abstract

The Montessori approach is an approach to pre-school education in the direction of contemporary education. The approach that provides with a free educational environment to the child is supportive of social relations. The use of natural materials in educational activities is another distinguishing feature of the approach. This study was designed to reveal the opinions of pre-school teachers about the Montessori approach. The study was a qualitative study and the data were collected by semi-structured interview technique. The working group constitutes the third and fourth year teacher candidates who are educated in Amasya University Faculty of Education Preschool Teaching Department. In the selection of the study group, six of the grade levels were randomly selected. Three main themes have been identified in the data collection tool. The themes included in the study; (1) the positive aspects of the Montessori approach, (2) the negative aspects of the Montessori approach, (3) the Montessori approach is as applicable in Turkey. These themes, which are included in the data collection tool, have been brought to the questionnaire format and they have been asked to answer these questions with preliminary from their p knowledge. The analysis of the data was done through descriptive analysis. In order to make the data analysis healthier, the interview forms were analyzed separately by the researchers. According to the findings obtained as a result of the study; third grade prospective teachers are positive that the approach is child-centered and freedom-based; fourth grade prospective teachers, as a positive aspect, to prepare for learning by living and to be freedom-based. As negative aspects of the approach, third grade prospective teachers indicate that the approach requires cost; fourth grade prospective teachers stated that the cost is high and that not enough time can be allocated to each child. Although the general opinion is being implemented in some schools about the applicability of the approach in Turkey is denoted it would be difficult to implement across the country. One of the most important findings in the study is that preschool teacher candidates have some misperception about the Montessori approach. It has been determined that there are disagreements between teacher candidates depending on the same cause. In order to eliminate the false perceptions about the Montessori approach, it is necessary for the prospective teachers to obtain more healthy and complete information during the education process. Seminars and conferences can be organized within the university to improve the field knowledge of prospective teachers. Besides this, it is not the individuals who acquire the information in a ready state; researching and developing open-minded teachers.
