Abstract

The issue of being, one of the fundamental problems in philosophy, has always been addressed by many civilizations in any period. The desire to grasp the truth of being and the attempt of making it unveiled entail that being has to be thought together with time. Considering the fact that an artwork reflects the conception of being of a civilization where it belongs to, in this paper, with a Sufistic interpretation, I want to think the concept of being in Ottoman poems with the concept of time. The verses taken from Azm?-z?de H?let?, one of the 17th century poets, are analysed. The consequence of this analysis draws a general framework about the use of the concept in D?v?n poetry. “Being” and “existence” which are the forms the concept takes in these poems are associated with the ranks of being in Sufistic thought and the time that belongs to these ranks is identified. The purpose of this paper, in the context of being and time through the D?v?n of Azm?-z?de H?let?, is to show the place of D?v?n poetry in Islamic civilization of classical period and to describe a civilization’s imagination that creates the texts of D?v?n poetry.
