Abstract

In this article, the transformation of conservation practices is examined from wildlife preservation to sustainable use. It is put forward that conservation practices are not only related to ecological issues, but also to social, economic, and political developments. First, protected areas are briefly reconsidered historically. The significance of the notion of wilderness, strict protectionism, and resource management on shaping the conservation practices is pointed out. Afterwards, the change in the conservation arena led by the emergence of global environmental governance is discussed thoroughly in terms of biodiversity and participatory conservation. Finally, land-use regulations and zoning in the protected areas are evaluated by taking into account the impacts of conservation practices on natural environment and local communities. It is shown that conservation practices are not limited to natural habitats but rather they are implemented with an ecosystem approach at the landscape scale.
