Abstract

Folk medicine can be named as traditional medicine the history of which goes back a long way. Folk medicine is a medicine that is learned and that can be practiced as a result of experiences. It can be said that folk medicine responded to the needs of the society to a great extent when modern medicine was not developed. Since folk medicine is fed by the beliefs, traditions and experiences of the society, it can be assessed as the product/reflection of a culture. Thus, it has developed and expanded day by day and survived until today. Due to being in a geography significant for the variety and richness of plants, Turkey has caused the emergence of herbalist trade, which is an important branch or assistant of folk medicine. Folk medicine has benefited from the experience and knowledge of herbalists and tried to practice folk medicine. It can be said that there are various ways to practice folk medicine. These ways include “el alma, ocaklı, okuyuculuk / rukyecilik”. The ways to perform medicine were grouped and discussed in terms of their sources. Folk medicine, which has a cultural aspect, can be seen as an alternative medicine to modern medicine of our day.
