Abstract

Although there is a prohibition on the use of force by states to another states and of interference in domestic affairs of sovereigns in international law, the consent of a state to the foreign armed forces has the potential to lift this ban. Many examples of interventions based on the consent of the related states exist in world history. Yet, intervention by invitation must have some material and formal conditions for ensuring the validity to international law. The intervention of France to Mali and another intervention of ECOWAS to Gambia must fulfil these conditions for being legitimate acts within international law. After examining material and formal conditions, relevant interventions of France and ECOWAS will be analyzed within the context of international law.
