Abstract

Sultan Abdulhamid II was a sultan who gave great importance to photos and also assigned the photographers to take various pictures during his reign (1876 - 1908). Vasilaki Kargopulo is one of the photographer who has been assigned to this issue by Sultan Abdulhamid II. Sultan Abdulhamid II, who used the photography for propoganda as well as many uses, sent many photo albums displaying the culture and development of Ottoman Empire to foreign countries. Among these carefully prepared albums, there is a family photo album of Sultan Abdulhamid II. There are photographs of people of dynastic and some information about the families of Sultan Abdülhamid II, Sultan Abdülaziz and Sultan Abdülmecid in the album of Sultan Abdulhamid II. Aim of this study is to examine the cloth culture in Ottoman Empire by analysing the sultana’s clothes in the family album of Sultan Abdulhamid. For this purpose the sultana’s photographs in the archives of İstanbul University Library Rare Books and Research Center of Islamıc History, Art and Culture (IRCICA) are used as a material in this study and the clothes of eleven sultanas in this photo album have been examined. It has been got necessary permission for the use of these photographs and it has also been paid to copyright. These girls’ clothes have been analysed as type of clothing, accessories, models and cutting. At the end of the study, it has been seen the impressions of Europan fashion era in sultanas’ clothes. It has been seen that girls wore dresses used frills and ruffles, with its model length and its hem width. It has been noted that children wore hats and boots as accessory.
