Abstract

The relationship between income and health has gained importance in recent years and lots of studies have been conducted to investigate this relationship. Observations in these investigations: Promotion of health, the quality of health care presentation and the expected life expectancy at birth have increased with the high income. In addition to relationship between income and health; the social, physical and psychological effects of income inequality on individuals have been investigated. Many indicators have been developed to define income inequality. These indicators measure absolute deprivation and relative deprivation. The concept of absolute deprivation has been regarded as a very general and rude indicator, which necessitates a more subjective and detailed assessment of the concept of relative deprivation, recently. In this study; the concept of absolute deprivation and relative deprivation, the definition of the Yitzhaki index (an index of relative deprivation), manually calculation of Yitzhaki index was explained, and, the areas of use and examples related to it was showed. Sufficient information about the Yitzhaki index could not be found in Turkish sources, and this study will provide significant contributions to understanding and assessing Yitzhaki index.
