NATIONAL ROMANTICISM AND ‘TURKISH’ IMAGE IN THE POETRY BOOK TITLED BOZGUN WRITTEN BY AKA GÜNDÜZ

Abstract

Aka Gündüz (1885-1958) is one of the productive writers of National and Republican Periods of Turkish Literature. His poetship is one of the salient qualities of Aka Gündüz. The poetry book titled Bozgun (1918) which is written by Aka Gündüz in National Literature Period puts forward a national romantic style which is the mainstream idea of the period. In Bozgun, national romanticism is the main spine of poems. Aka Gündüz, who witnessed the Balkan Wars and the First World War years, tells about the persecutions, destructions and massacres of the Turkish geography and revolts against these events. He activates the national sentiments through the ‘Turkish’ image which is portrayed in an epic style and expresses his belief that the Turkish geography will get rid of from persecutions and destructions. In this study, ‘Turkish’ image and national romantic aspect of the poems of Aka Gündüz in relation to the ‘Turkish’ image in Bozgun is pointed out. The Bozgun is examined in this direction and evaluated in respect of the work’s thematic aspect, message, poet’s ideological trends and national romantic aspect in relation to ‘Turkish’ image.
