THE INVESTIGATION OF THE PROBLEM SOLVING SKILLS OF THE PRIMARY SCHOOL STUDENTS

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the level of problem solving skills, whether they differ according to various variables, Descriptive screening model was used in the study. The universe of the research is composed of primary school students in primary, 2nd, 3rd and 4th class in Istanbul. The sample of the study is composed of 1174 primary school students in the provinces of Küçükçekmece, Avcılar, Beylikdüzü and Bağcılar in İstanbul who study 2nd, 3rd and 4th class in primary schools. Personal Information Form and "Problem Solving Inventory for Children" were used as data collection tool in the study. Implementations of the scales were carried out in the first semester of the academic year 2017-2018. SPSS was used in the analysis of the data. As a result of the data analysis, it was found that primary school students had a medium level of problem solving skills in total average and self-efficacy subscale, high level in confidence subscale in problem solving skills, and low level in avoidance subscale. Problem solving skills of primary school students do not show any significant difference in total average according to the variables of gender, grade level, mother education status, father education status, sibling number, material status and health status.
