Abstract

Autobiographical memory specificity is based on the internal and external episodic details of autobiographical memories. The internal episodic details of autobiographical memories are evaluated according to the categories of detail such as event, location, time, perceptual characteristics, emotion / thought, while the external details are determined by categories such as external event, semantics, repetition and other details. Accordingly, while a specific autobiographical narrative has more internal episodic details, general autobiographical memories do not have these details. The present study aimed to compare the autobiographical memories of 60 healthy elderly people aged 65 years and over in context of autobiographical memory specificity and gender variables. The same coding system was used in the research by applying a similar research method to Levine, Svoboda, Hay, Winocur and Moscovitch (2002). The narratives of the participants were recorded by taking their permissions and analyzed in terms of internal and external details. As a result, it was observed that women have more detail in the emotion / thought category than the internal detail elements of men and that there is no significant gender difference in terms of general autobiographical memory specificity and other internal and external detail categories. In addition, as expected from the study, it was observed that participants tend to remember external detail rather than internal details.
