Abstract

Traditional carpet weaving, an important part of our culture, expanded to many regions of Anatolia after Turks’ arrival to Anatolia and with gaining its own character, traditional weaving continued to exist till the modern times. Regional carpets that were woven in Anatolia have different features in terms of composition, motifs and colours used, and they are distinguished by weaving techniques and raw materials. Among these weavings, with its rough and long pile appereance and in terms its utility, “bed rugs” are a rarely known group of carpets. “Bed rugs” are named according to their utility purposes; one of the wellknown production places of bed rugs is the village of Yaylacık (its ancient name is Nuzumla) in the city of Seydişehir, Konya. It appears that there are other kind of rugs woven in similar techniques outside of this region which are also called as bed rugs by rug weavers. About the bed rugs, there are not extensive publications other than a master’s thesis on Nuzumla bed rugs. Rare visual examples can only be found in international auction houses’ websites and in the websites of rug dealers. Mr. Orhan Özer who is one of the important carpet dealers of Aegean region, owns the Özer Carpet and Rugs Company in Turgutlu, Manisa, is trying to make a collection of bed rugs which are few in number. In his collection, there are examples from different regions. In this paper, by examining the collection of Orhan Özer, it is aimed to bring new bed rug examples into the literature and to provide resources for researchers. The working methods in this paper is conducted with bibliographical research and examining-documenting the original sources.
