ANALYZING THE IMAGINATION ABILITY OF ATHLETES DEALING WITH TEAM AND INDIVIDUAL SPORTS

Abstract

Dreaming and imagination accelerate developments in terms of setting goals and achieve them and these also help us reach our aims. In this matter, imagination is considered is one of the most important concepts which affect athletes’ performances in a positive way. In this study, we aim to analyze the differences in imagination ability among athletes in team sports and individual sports. From 50 different university, 25 female and 25 male who have been doing badminton sports for average (8,66±3,33) years and whose average of age is (20,9±2,31); and 25 female and 25 male who have been doing basketball sports for average (6,44±2,94) years and whose average of age is (19,8±1,35) participated in this study. To identify their imagination style, Imagination Inventory in Sports (SİE) by Hall et.al (Hall et. al, 1998) was applied. Turkish adaptation of this Imagination Inventory in Sports was made by Kızıldağ (Kızıldağ, 2007). Mann Whitney U test was used to analyze the descriptive statistics and differences among the groups in data analyzing. Correlation value was also studied. Significant differences in 0<0,05 level were found in intragroup correlation values and in gender differences of basketball group. Significant differences in 0<0,05 level were found in cognitive imagination and sub-dimension of motivational general mastership. (P<0,05) However, no significant differences in 0<0,05 level were found in motivational special imagination and motivational general evoked sub-dimensions. According to gender differences, basketball group was defined to have more imagination points in terms of sub-dimension of motivational general mastership. (P<0,05).
