Abstract

In 1927, The Cranbrook Academy was established in Detroit by George G. Booth. The weaving department began functioning with Loja Saarinen who was actually a sculpture but also practiced weaving design. But the boom period of designing and production activities began when Eliel Saarinen invited Marianne Strengel from Finland. Strengell who completed her weaving education in Helsinki came to Cranbrook in 1937. She followed a curriculum that completely fitted in the principles of the academy. At that time, she designed and produced interior design textiles like upholstery, curtain fabrics, blankets, apparel fabric designs and carpets. This school has indeed become one of the centres of art and industrial design in The USA as his founder Booth wished. Many people who became famous in textile design and art received education here. Jack Lenor Larsen, Robert D. Sailors, Ed Rossbach are some of them. In this article, the development of today’s textile design tradition at the Cranbrook Academy of Art, which was founded with a specific design and production philosophy, will be analysed through various produced textile products and designers named here.
