Abstract

When Connell first introduced the theory of “Masculinities”, she made a breakthrough with respect to shattering the idea of a uniform masculine identity. Connell, who pointed out to four types of masculinity found within the gender order which entail hegemonic masculinity, complicit masculinity, subordinated masculinity and marginalized masculinity placed hegemonic masculinity at the top of the gender hierarchy. However, hegemonic masculinity became the most-widely-studied masculinity type in masculinity studies. The aim of this study is to critically focus on the fact that hegemonic masculinity is ironically making other masculinities “invisible” in academia. First, the “Masculinities” theory was evaluated, then the clues as to the origin of the problem were backtracked and possible solutions were provided to overcome the problem.
