Abstract

The political and social history of Togo is characterized by obstacles and difficulties that the people still bear the aftermath. The basis of these upheavals lies in the process of (Western) modernization which is imposed to African societies since their first contacts with the West. Nowadays, it is pertinent to analyze current events and issues related to this process. Indeed, historical and sociological studies conclude that the process of modernization of Togolese society has caused profound upheavals and confirm the imposition of a socio-political model by the West. These upheavals reflect the current social changes in African societies. The documentary method combined with the observation of the current situation constitute the methodological framework of this study. Overall, this study concludes that the process of modernization has upset the socio-traditional order of Togolese society and has created a ruling elite that imposes to the population a Western modernity that this elite itself has little control over.
