Abstract

Shopping and commerce were found to satisfy the needs of humans. The discovery of money during the Lydian period enabled the trade to become easier and widespread. With the development of transportation and communication in various periods, the trade took its present form. During this process, the contemporary economic system improved, regulatory laws were made and trading venue designs more suited for today’s sense of business increased. One part of the Silk Road - historically significant for its contribution to the development of commerce on the Globe - occupies the Anatolia. The Hejaz-Baghdad railway that goes inside the city contributed to its economic growth as well. Izmit became a heavily industrial city thanks to the some establishments. Witnessing the change and development seen in trading venues throughout Turkey in all its colours and shades, Izmit is just like an actual laboratory that harbours lots of big shopping centres today, fit to be a good sample for examination. Within the context of this study, the change and development of the trading venues in Turkey will be further studied by taking the city of Izmit as basis and working through it, how these reflect on Izmit architecturally and socio-economically will be determined to be whether positive or negative. The goal of this study is to shed light on other researches that investigate trading venues in an architectural sense.
