Abstract

Vocabulary can be defined as all of the words in a language, verbal repertoire, or lexicon. Every word included in the vocabulary can indicate a feature of that language. The vocabulary studies based on poets and writers can give a glimpse of their life and mindset. It can shape the perspective of the society, their beliefs, customs and traditions, namely, their world of concepts. While the writers are influenced by the community they live in, they can also be the voice of the public. They can give the language an identity with the collective memory while creating it. This article begins with information regarding Abdülhak Şinasi Hisar's life and works, then moves on to scan his seven literary works to determine the most frequently used names, verbs, conjunctions and dates. The work contains the following seven works: Ali Nizami Bey’in Alafrangalığı ve Şeyhliği, Boğaziçi Mehtapları, Boğaziçi Yalıları, Çamlıca’daki Eniştemiz, Fahim Bey ve Biz, Geçmiş Zaman Fıkraları, Geçmiş Zaman Köşkleri. The article aims to capture a general idea of Abdülhak Şinasi Hisar's culture and outlook on life and how it is reflected in these seven works by analyzing the sentences that represent his style.
