Abstract

This article reviews the available literature on domestic violence perpetrator interventions in Turkey in order to understand how the Turkish system attempts to stop men’s violent behaviour in family settings. Articles, theses and reports were gathered by searching electronic databases. The findings were then presented systematically. Many researchers have focused on examining the reasons around domestic violence in Turkey. These reasons are associated with individual issues, the patriarchal structure and inadequate social work and clinical intervention practices. This has highlighted the need to conduct a detailed and in-depth study on domestic violence perpetrator interventions. Based on this literature review, it is clear that new and systematic strategies and laws are required within social work and health services. This article recommends that perpetrator intervention programmes must be established that are run by professionals, social workers, psychologists and psychiatrists. It is hoped that the article will improve strategies for reducing and stopping male violence in family settings. It is suggested that social policy-makers should recognise the current inadequate rules and laws around domestic violence perpetrator intervention procedures and efforts. Given these recommendations, it is concluded that the protection of women and children survivors of domestic violence should be guaranteed by the government as human rights.
