Abstract

The discussions on mass and surface in art quickly concludes in the association of mass with sculpture and surface with painting. Sculpture calls to mind three dimensional objects in space with shadow casting on the ground, and painting, lines and paints on a flat surface. Nonetheless, it is not simple to draw the boundaries between these two fields in the aftermath of modernist criticism. This article aims to unpack how the contemporary forms of artistic practice questions the definitions of sculpture and painting based on the distinction between mass and surface. Moreover, it draws attention to the still persisting histories of painting and sculpture, even though the boundaries between them have liquidated within the interdisciplinary artistic practice.
