INVESTIGATION OF PRIMARY SCHOOL TEACHERS’ AND PRINCIPALS’ ATTITUDES TOWARDS VALUES EDUCATION

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the attitudes of primary school teachers and principals’ regarding the values education. In the research, which was organised according to the scientific screening model, the following sub questions have been searched. 1- Which level do primary school teachers have towards attitudes of values education? 2- Do the attitudes of primary school teachers towards values education differentiate according to their age, gender, marital status, professional seniority, uptime at school, level of education, type of the school they work for and the districts they work for? The universe of the study is constituted by primary school teachers who work in public schools and private schools that in Bağcılar, Bahçelievler and Bakırköy districts of Istanbul in 2017-2018 school year. 337 primary school teachers who work in this districts constitute the sample. In research, “Values Education Attitude Scale” was used for obtaining data. Primary school teachers’ attitude scores which applied in schools, related to values education not at the highest level, it reveals that teachers perceived values education applied in school positive. There is no significant difference between primary school teachers’ attitudes toward values education with respect to age, gender, marital status, working time in the school, education level and the district they work. It was found that there is a significant difference in primary school teachers’ attitudes related with values education as interdepend their occupational seniority. Attitude points related to values education of teachers which have experience from 1 to 10 year are higher than teachers which have experience from 11 to 15 years. The attitudes of primary school principals towards values education were found to be more favorable than that of primary school teachers, and they did not differ according to gender, marital status, education level, type of school they served, and district where they work. According to age, the attitudes of primary school principals between 22-30 years old are more positive than other age groups. According to the professional seniority, the attitudes of the primary school principals between 1-10 and 11-15 are higher than the others. According to the working time in the school, it was concluded that the attitudes of the primary school principals who work between 1-5 years were higher than the other groups.
