Abstract

Space appears with light. Light is an inseparable part of space behind the boundaries of a structure. Openings were formed to receive light and air on the façade of the space which is restricted behind the walls. These gaps are integrated into the facade as windows. Glass that covers the window openings is considered as a piece of the structure, which is rather complementary. However, there are certain circumstances where glass is both an element of the space and the enclosure of the space. Stained glasses of Gothic Cathedrals, top windows of mosques and the head windows of old Anatolian houses are among its best examples. In the traditional Turkish Architecture, the top windows of mosques and the head windows in the civil architecture are covered with revzens which consist of glass pieces that are connected to each other with plaster so as to create a design. The lower windows are the elements of the building that help to see exteriors, illuminate interiors and building exterior/interior relation, while the top windows are a space within the space; they are both a piece of the space and they also depict the space.
