Abstract

The Eastern Mediterranean Region, located at the crossroads of Europe, Africa and Asia, is also at a point to control most of the Middle East. This region has recently come to the forefront with its hydrocarbon reserves. The complex energy map of the Eastern Mediterranean Region is based on multiple imbalances and asymmetries. Despite the existence of rich hydrocarbon reserves in the region since the 1950s, there has not been any study on these reserves until the 2000s with the effects of technological shortcomings and some political factors. After the 2000s, hydrocarbon reserves in this region have become a focus of interest due to the rapidly increasing energy demand in the world, and important steps have been taken in terms of the extraction and marketing of resources. However, the fact that a significant portion of the reserves are located on the high seas has caused some discussions in terms of international law. The discovery of hydrocarbon reserves in the Eastern Mediterranean, the increasing interest of global actors in the region, has also affected the Cyprus problem as many problems with historical background in the region. The Cyprus problem, which came to the international agenda in the 1950s, has been shaped by many historical developments since this period and it has continued its unresolvedness until today. Articulation with the discovery of hydrocarbons on the Cyprus problem, the Greek Cypriot Administration, along with Egypt and Israel on the island of Turks and political problems in the region, in defiance of the treaty made clear that Turkey's rights to any further increases. In this study, the Cyprus problem, which has become an energy problem in the new energy equation, which is formed by the discovery of hydrocarbon reserves, will be examined.
