WAR IMAGES IN THE PAINTINGS OF SYRIAN REFUGEE STUDENTS LIVING IN TURKEY

Abstract

In this study the images of war in hometown and immigration themed paintings of Syrian students who migrated to Turkey due to the civil war began in 2011 were examined. The population of the research was from the 5th-grade students in our country, and the samples consisted of 36 enrolled in the 5th grade of Mustafa Necati Secondary School and Bülbülzade Edip Ahmet Secondary School in Şahinbey, Gaziantep. In the study, 72 pictures were evaluated. The students were asked to asked to draw firstly hometown themed and migration themed paintings. Childeren’s paintings were examined by the descriptive method. The images were identified by analyzing the paintings withim the context of human, object and writing. At the end of the examinations, it was observed that refugee children intensely used images that directly or indirectly evoked war such as “airplane, border gate, bullet, blood, soldier, fence, cannon, gun, tank, flag, dead and injured human figures” in their paintings.
