Abstract

This study aims to determine the type of activities that take place in the book named “Türkçe Anadil Dersleri 8” which is read by children of the Turkish origin families living in Germany, aiming at improving the visual literacy skill, whether these activities are in sufficient quantity or not and whether their quality is sufficient for visual literacy or not. The data required for the research was obtained by scanning the book “Türkçe Anadil Dersleri 8” which was taught in Germany in 2018-2019 academic year. In this study, document analysis method which is one of the qualitative research patterns was used. In the book examined, it was seen that some activities take place in a way to provide visual literacy and some activities are insufficiently reflected or not reflected at all. It is understood that the visualization of text types such as fairy tales, stories and poems using photographs has a diminishing effect on visual literacy, the visuals used in some reading texts describe only some part or parts of the text and the number of images used in some reading texts is extremely insufficient. In the process of visualizing activities aimed at improving visual literacy skills, field experts, painters, art historians, graphic designers and pedagogues should carry out a joint study.
