Abstract

Zalikha, who defamed Prophet Joseph, an example of chastity, and caused him to stay in prison for years, regrets for what she did. She confesses her sin and admits Prophet Joseph’s innocence.Nevertheless, some prominent Muslim commentators, who included weak or fabricated reports of Israiliyyat without adequate investigation, assert that Prophet Joseph desired Zalikha and sought to seduce her. According to these commentators, Prophet Joseph said “I do not exonerate myself,” because of the inappropriate behavior he displayed. To attribute this statement to Prophet Joseph is a big mistake. In mystudy,I will provewith evidence that this statement actually belongs to Zalikha. Prophet Joseph, whose innocence was admitted by the women as told in the preceding verses, cannot have said “I do not exonerate myself” with guilt feelings because he never committed such a sin. It is not possible that Joseph, as an impeccable prophet who has been the symbol of chastity, could desire Zalikha and then say "I do notexonerate myself."
