Abstract

The purpose of the study is to develop a scale to measure the attitudes towards foreign language learning. Related literature was searched and 30 items was prepared. Through the opinion of professionals number of items were reduced to 14 and a likert type expressions with five degrees were created. Draft scale was applied to 448 students studying programs in English, German and French Language teaching at Gazi university. The structural validity of the scale was assessed in the factor analysis and six items were deleted. As a result of analysis it had a structure explaining the 63,316’of the total variance and consisting of three dimensions (interest, utility and concern) with 10 positive and 6 negative items which make totally 16 items. Confirmatory factor analysis conducted and it was identified that the model showed a acceptable fit to the data. Reliability analyse was carried out through Cronbach’s Alpha and the Cronbach’s Alpha value was found as 0,92. It is concluded that the scale is valid, reliable and can be used to measure students' attitudes towards foreign language learning. At the same time, studies can be carried out to determine the attitudes of different participants with this scale and learning problems arising from attitudes can be determined and arrangements can be made to eliminate them.
